Vaginal infections

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common cause of abnormal vaginal discharge. Additional symptoms of BV include vaginal odor and a burning sensation. 

BV occurs when there is a change in the number and types of bacteria in the vagina. Lactobacilli are a type of bacteria that are normally found in the vagina. In people with BV, the concentration of lactobacilli is reduced while the numbers of other bacteria increase. 

Risk factors

  • Sexual activity
  • Menstruation
  • Hormonal changes

Symptoms

  • “fishy smelling” vaginal discharge 
  • Vulvar irritation 

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of BV is based on physical examination and laboratory testing. 

Treatment

  • Antibiotics
  • Boric acid
  • Vaginal estrogen
