Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder

Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) is a rare and distressing condition characterized by spontaneous, persistent, and intrusive sensations of genital arousal that are not associated with sexual desire or arousal.

People with PGAD experience persistent genital sensations, such as tingling, throbbing, or pulsating, in the absence of any sexual stimulation or desire. These sensations can be intense and overwhelming, leading to significant distress and disruption in daily life. It is important to note that PGAD is not related to sexual pleasure and may cause discomfort or pain in some cases. The ongoing nature of PGAD can lead to significant emotional distress, anxiety, depression, and difficulties in social and interpersonal relationships.

Diagnosing PGAD requires a thorough evaluation and involves ruling out other possible medical conditions that may cause similar symptoms, such as genital infections, nerve disorders, or hormonal imbalances. A comprehensive medical history, physical examination, and various tests may be conducted to identify potential underlying causes.

The treatment of PGAD is challenging, as there is no universally effective cure. Since PGAD can have both physical and psychological components, a multidisciplinary approach to management is recommended.
